Introit.   Nos autem gloriari.  Gal. 6.   But as for us, it behoveth us to glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, our life and resurrection, by whom we were saved and obtained our freedom.  Psalm 67.   God be merciful unto us, and bless us, and show us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us.   But as for us . . .

Collect for Maundy Thursday.    Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, did institute the Sacrament of his Body and Blood;  Mercifully grant that we may thankfully receive the same in remembrance of him, who in these holy mysteries giveth us a pledge of life eternal; the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit ever, one God, world without end.

Epistle.  1 Corinthians xi. 23.    I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:  and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat:  this is my body, which is broken for you:  this do in remembrance of me.  After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood:  this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.  For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come.

Gradual Verse.  Philippians 2.  Christ became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross.  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a Name which is above every name.

Gospel.    St John xiii. 1.  Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world, he loved them unto the end.  And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him; Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; he riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.  After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.  Then cometh he to Simon Peter:  and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?  Jesus answered and said unto him,  What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.  Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet.  Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.  Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.  Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit:  and ye are clean, but not all.  For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.  So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Lord:  and ye say well; for so I am.  If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.  For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

Proper Preface.  Because by the Tree of the Cross thou hast wrought the salvation of the race of man; that whence death arose, thence also Life might rise again; and that he who by a tree was once the vanquisher, might also
by a Tree be vanquished; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Therefore . . .
